Convallaria

When and how much to irrigate

The genus of plants called Convallaria includes rhizomatous species and varieties. If the bulbs are grown outdoors, no watering is necessary during the winter season. On the contrary, if the rhizomes are kept in a pot it is advisable to water when the substrate is dry. With the arrival of the spring season the water supply becomes constant, especially when the first new shoots start to appear. To obtain a rich and fragrant flowering, it is important that the waterings are dispensed well, without causing water stagnations that easily lead to the development of root rots and molds. In the hot days of the summer months it may be appropriate to spray and sprinkle directly on the foliage, which helps to withstand the most sultry temperatures.

How to take care of it

Convallaria plants are born spontaneously and can be cultivated easily in the northern territories of our country. Instead, in the southern regions it is very difficult for them to grow, given the climate too mild for their needs. They do not require particular types of soil, they can adapt very well to less fertile, arid and stony soils. In any case, they prefer slightly calcareous, fresh and soft substrates, composed of universal soil and coarse sand, which facilitates irrigation drainage. The most suitable time for planting small rhizomes is in autumn or you can plant with the arrival of the spring season. Convallaria bulbs are not afraid of winter weather conditions and can tolerate frost and snow without difficulty.

When and how to fertilize

The fertilizations are not always necessary for the Convallaria plants. However, to obtain an abundant flowering it can be useful to administer a specific product for flowering plants. The solution mixes directly with the irrigation water and the operation is repeated, starting in March, every 15 days. At the end of the flower production it is advisable to suspend completely with the fertilizations. If the rhizomes are stored underground and outdoors, it is possible to provide an organic soil conditioner, which provides the soil with all the essential elements necessary to promote healthy and lush growth. Alternatively, you can opt for a slow release granular fertilizer. In this case, the administrations take place in two distinct periods of the year, in autumn and at the beginning of the spring months.

Convallaria: Exposure, diseases and remedies

When cultivating plants of the Convallaria genus it is very important to choose the optimal location, to favor their growth and flowering. In fact, these vegetables strongly fear direct exposure to sunlight, while the ideal is to opt for a medium-shade, cool and well-ventilated environment. In general, Convallaria species are quite resistant to diseases and parasitic attacks. However, in spring they can be hit by slugs, to avoid the onset of this problem, it is useful in March, to spread a snail shell on the ground. If the environmental context is too humid, plants can be affected by fungal diseases. In this case, it is advisable to promptly intervene, suspending irrigation and using a special fungicide.
